Ep 17:
Seems Ryan is feeling a little weird about Oliver. He might be a little jealous of the time Marissa and he are spending together. Seth tells him he has every right to feel that way, but that Oliver isn't really anyone to be jealous about, that he has as many flaws as Ryan does. Something has been bothering Seth as well, about his relationship with Anna. Seems things are going too perfect. Seth is afraid that he and Anna are too similar, and enjoy too many of the same things, so he is on a mission to change that. Just when Seth convinces Ryan to get over Oliver and Marissa's relationship, which he agrees to, Oliver shows up as a new transfer student to Harbour.
Sandy and Jimmy discuss their drunken plans to take over ownership of The Lighthouse restaurant, and Sandy is ecstatic. Jimmy is not so enthused. He passes the idea off as a drunken rambling. But Sandy insists it is doable, and won't take no for an answer. Over at Kirsten's office, Julie shows up looking for a job. Kirsten is sceptical at first, but eventually gives in and allows Julie to try out the interior design position for Caleb's newest model home.
Back at school, the gang gets to meet Summer's new boyfriend, Danny. Danny likes to make people laugh, and achieves his goal effortlessly. This bothers Seth, because he is no longer the funny one in the group. Ryan and Oliver have a chat about why he transferred schools, to which Oliver replies that he had "an incident" at his old school. When Ryan asks Seth what he thinks of this information, Seth shrugs it off and tells Ryan to get over it. He tells Ryan that he just needs to accept that Oliver is in their life now, and make peace with it. But that night, Ryan makes no peace with it, as he breaks into the school records room and reads Oliver's file. But he gets himself caught by security.
The next day, Ryan, Sandy, and Kirsten meet with Dr. Kim, the dean of the school, to discuss Ryan's trouble, and his sentence of detention. Ryan informs the group that he read that Oliver was found at his old school with slashed wrists, the result of Oliver's feeling toward a girl. Ryan defends himself by saying he was merely concerned for Marissa.
Outside, Seth tells Anna that he doesn't think Danny is funny, but Anna gets upset, accusing Seth of being jealous about the fact that Summer is moving on with Danny. Seth insists that Danny just isn't funny. But even he knows it is really about Summer. Ryan sees Oliver and Marissa talking, and then sees Oliver giver her a letter, which she puts in her locker. Ryan goes over to the locker after they leave and he breaks in, taking the letter.
Back home, Sandy and Kirsten express their disappointment in Ryan over the whole situation. In the poolhouse, Ryan tells Seth about the letter, but Seth wants nothing to do with it, and says he thinks Ryan might have a problem. But Ryan reads it anyway.
At work, Julie is going over the top with plans for the model home. Kirsten is upset by it, but Julie insists she's only trying to make the home special, to sell a "lifestyle". But it turns out her lavish plans fail, and Kirsten was right, there was no time to make the space special. Caleb likes the "simple, classic" design though, and tells Kirsten he'll hire Julie full time. With Sandy, Jimmy expresses his worries about the Lighthouse. He is worried he'll fail again. Sandy says that is ridiculous.
Back at school, Seth tries to prove to Anna that he will try and like Danny, by inviting him over after school to play videogames. In the hall, Ryan sees Oliver and they share some sarcastic words. Luke comes up and Oliver invites them both to a camping trip he is planning with Marissa. When Oliver leaves, Luke lets Ryan know that he hates Oliver, and will beat him up if he wants him to. At least someone is on Ryan's side. Back at the Cohen's, Danny tells Seth that Summer thinks Seth is the funniest guy, and that he is feeling insecure about it. Danny asks Seth to tone it down. Seth tells Danny to hype it up, make his comedy more "big".
At school, Dr. Kim meets with Marissa to talk about Ryan's actions, which Marissa knew nothing about. She confronts Ryan about it, who then reveals the letter. Marissa tells him that the letter was for Natalie from Oliver. Ryan feels dumb, and Marissa storms out. The next day at school, Summer tells Seth that she is breaking up with Danny because he is too "big" now. Seth is sympathetic, but obviously pleased. Just then, Anna walks up, and Seth and her walk off, leaving Summer alone. Outside, Ryan sees Marissa and Oliver together, chipper as can be. And at the Lighthouse, Jimmy signs the papers last minute, to make him and sandy the new owners, and partners, of the Lighthouse.
To end a terrible day, Oliver approaches Ryan seeming friendly at first. Ryan seems defeated, and apologizes for his actions. He seems willing to be friends now. But then Oliver tells Ryan of his plans. Oliver says that Marissa and himself are meant to be together, and that it is fate that they'll be together. Ryan isn't in the picture anymore, which makes him very upset. He punches Oliver twice in the face, drawing blood, but sealing his place, outside of Marissa's life
