Ep 9:
It's the first day back at classes for the O.C. kids. Of course, everyone is just thrilled. The one dreading it the most is Marissa. At first she says she isn't going, but Summer talks her into it. It turns out that everyone at Harbour School is talking about Marissa's ‘breakdown', and speaking about her like she's a crazy person - including Holly. No one acknowledges Luke or Holly's cruelty, however. Ryan notices how uncomfortable Marissa is and makes a date with her to meet after school. He is mutually uncomfortable being at the prep school, especially since Luke is everywhere.
Seth is excited to see Anna show up at school, back from her sailing trip to Tahiti. He tells her about how cold Summer is being to him. Anna tells Seth she'll try her best to help him get his girl.
At work, Sandy meets with Rachel, who has a big case for him to handle. Turns out someone is looking to tear up and develop some land next to a fragile wetland, the Balboa Wetlands. The developer is Kirsten's father's company. Sandy reluctantly accepts the case, but knows it isn't going to go over well with Kirsten, or Caleb. Kirsten is already a bit jealous about Rachel's place in Sandy's life after all.
Marissa meets with Dr. Kim about dropping her extracurricular activities, but Dr. Kim convinces her not to disappear, to get involved instead. Dr. Kim advises that people are always going to talk, and to run and hide would be silly, it would be better to give them something good to talk about instead. Marissa leaves the meeting with a renewed sense of self, and decides to re-join the carnival planning committee. Her date with Ryan will have to be cancelled. She invites him to the carnival instead.
The next day, Ryan voices his discomfort at Harbour with Sandy. Sandy tells him he just needs to get involved, perhaps in an extra-curricular activity. Seth suggests soccer, as Ryan used to play it. Over at Jimmy's, Luke drops by to see Marissa. But Jimmy doesn't let him get past the door. Luke tells Jimmy to tell Marissa that he's sorry, and Marissa overhears it.
At school, Seth offers Summer a seat next to him in class, but Anna offers him a seat next to her. He sits with Anna. Her plan is to make Summer jealous, and it seems to be working, even though Summer hides it with her bitchiness.
Kirsten shows up at Sandy's work after finding out about his involvement in the case against her and her father's company. She claims there isn't even a case, he claims otherwise and they butt heads.
Back at school, Ryan shows up for soccer practice. Luke is surprised to see his new team-member. After practice, Luke goes to see Marissa, and she lets him know what a pig he's been. He takes her aside and tells her he's sorry, and that he wants to start over. He says he loves her. He even cries. Marissa, though touched, turns down his offer, saying that she'd still love him if he hadn't cheated. Ryan sees the whole thing through a window.
The next day (day three of school), Marissa asks Ryan where he was the night before. He avoids the subject and Marissa tells him she'll come by soccer practice later.
Summer asks Seth to be her lab partner, but Anna comes in and says she is his partner. Anna's plan is still working, though Seth would obviously have loved to work with Summer.
Later, Marissa shows up at soccer practice. Ryan sees Marissa and Luke speaking and gets jealous and angry. He tackles Luke. At dinner, none of the Cohen's have anything to say, seems they‘ve all had a bad day. Later, Marissa confronts Ryan about the tackle. Ryan snaps about how Luke and Marissa are getting back together. Marissa gets defensive and storms out. When Ryan tries to speak to her the next day she walks away.
That next evening (after day four of class), Sandy and Kirsten make up, and make out, by the pool in the backyard. Kirsten understands why Sandy has to take the environmental case, she'll just have to be a good buffer between Sandy and Caleb. She's ready for it.
Meanwhile at the carnival, Seth and Anna are still working on making Summer jealous. Ryan can see that Anna might have feelings for Seth, she tells her she doesn't have to settle for being the friend. Anna kisses Seth, and Summer sees it. When Seth asks if it was part of the plan Anna says yes, but, it wasn't. Seth leaves to ride the Tilt-A-Whirl with Summer.
To cap off the evening, Ryan and Marissa take a Ferris Wheel ride, even though Ryan is terrified of heights. He apologizes to Marissa for his behaviour, saying that he wants to make their relationship work. Marissa leans in and kisses Ryan, and the night is beautiful.
