Ep 8:
Everyone is still in shock after Marissa's near-death experience after an overdose in Tijuana. Everyone is back home in Newport, and Marissa is recovering in the hospital. It is the beginning of the school year, but no one is thinking about class registration. Ryan and Seth are solemnly concerned about Marissa's condition and wait by the phone. Julie and Jimmy wait at the bedside of Marissa, Jimmy just devastated, and Julie looking anywhere and everywhere to place the blame. When Marissa finally becomes conscious, the Cohens rush to the hospital.
After a brief visit, Julie requests a word with Ryan before the Cohens leave. She tells him that her daughter was a happy person before he came to town, and that he ought to feel responsible for Marissa's current condition. Julie forbids Ryan from ever seeing her daughter again. Ryan tells her that she is welcome to place blame where she will, but that he has nothing but good intentions when it comes to Marissa. Julie also informs Jimmy that she plans on taking him to court in order to get full custody of their children. She also blames him for Marissa's condition. Julie wants to send Marissa to an institution for troubled women in San Diego.
Later in the day, Sandy starts work at his new big-time law firm. He's gone from treating heavy cases for poor people to treating light, frivolous cases for rich people. He manages to have a sense of humour about it, and shrugs it off. He is a bit overwhelmed by the presentation Rachel shows him.
Meanwhile, Ryan, Seth, and Summer are at Harbour School, a private University prep school, registering for fall classes. Ryan meets with Dr. Kim, the school administrator, about enrolling at the school. She is hesitant about allowing such a person into the school, but agrees that he is promising and that if he passes an entrance exam, he'll be allowed in. Ryan is overwhelmed by the posh Harbour School atmosphere (tennis courts and swimming pools), but is excited about the possibilities. While Ryan and Kirsten are meeting with Dr. Kim, Seth and Summer chat about Marissa. Summer then ditches Seth when some snooty cheerleaders look down on her (and Seth).
When Marissa wakes, and after Julie eaves, she calls Ryan, and he comes to visit her in the hospital. Marissa apologizes to him, and swears that she didn't want to kill herself. Julie returns to the hospital and Ryan returns home to finish studying for his test. Julie asks the hospital to bump up security to keep Ryan out. Then she tells Marissa about the 'institution' in San Diego. Marissa pretends to go along with it, but goes to the bathroom and calls Summer. Summer then goes over to Seth's, and they hatch a plan to get Marissa out of the hospital, but they will need Ryan's help. Meanwhile, Rachel lets Sandy know that not every case can go to court. He's going to have to use his persuasion skills to get some of the cases to settle. Only deserving cases can go to trial.
Summer and Seth go to Harbour School to get Ryan out of his test. Dr. Kim walks in and threatens that if Ryan leaves, he won't get into her school. He says the school wouldn't really be the place for him anyway.
Back at the hospital, Marissa begins her therapy with Dr. Burke. It is revealed that she once had anorexia, and was caught shoplifting. She also drinks too much. Summer uses her position as a Candy Striper to get Ryan, Seth and herself into the hospital without suspicion. They run into Luke, but manage to get Marissa out. They all go to Jimmy's.
Jimmy is with Kirsten, and they go to a bar where Sandy and Rachel are drinking. Kirsten becomes suspicious of Rachel's motives when she sees how young and drunk she is. She later confront Sandy about his and Rachel's intentions. Sandy puts her back in place when he tells her that he's had no problems with her closeness to Jimmy, her ex-lover. Kirsten realizes she may have been overreacting.
When Jimmy returns home, he finds Marissa at his place. He says Julie is in control, especially with her impending custody fight. He calls her, and tells her where their daughter is. But Marissa leaves. She goes to the Cohen's. Ryan and Sandy call Julie over and they, along with Marissa, confront her. They make her see that the institution is not what Marissa needs. Marissa says she'll continue with therapy, but that she wants to live with her father for now, and she wants her mother to stay out of her business.
After pulling some strings, Sandy gets Dr. Kim to allow Ryan to retake his entrance exam. He passes with flying colours, and Dr. Kim welcomes him to Harbour School. But, she warns that she'll be watching him. All of this, in one happy day in Orange County.
