Ep 6:
Kirsten's father, Caleb Nichol, comes for a visit along with his new girlfriend, Gabrielle. Caleb Nichol basically owns Newport Beach and is used to having everything revolve around him. Seth tells Ryan that Caleb has become relatively mellow compared to his 'bullish' days. Everyone is curious and anxious to meet Caleb's newest trophy girlfriend. Upon arrival to the Cohen home, she goes straight into the pool, which is a very pleasant sight for Ryan and Seth, who happen to see her exiting the pool in her very revealing bathing suit. 24-year-old Grandma has arrived.
Regardless of the fact that Kirsten is busy planning Caleb a birthday bash, he decides to 'demote' her, reducing her responsibilities within his company due to her new family responsibilities (i.e. Ryan), and because she'll be busy repairing the house he burnt down. Sandy is absolutely furious with Caleb's constant need for control, and asks Kirsten to evaluate their life in Newport Beach. Is it really so important to live there?
Luke, who is recovering from his gunshot wound to the arm, seems to have realized how short life is, and he asks Marissa for a second chance. He wants to be together again. In a far-too friendly-to-be-real way, he thanks Ryan for assisting him to the hospital the night of the shooting. Ryan seems shattered to see Marissa back with Luke, but Marissa herself hasn't exactly made up her mind. Meanwhile, another Cooper has a decision of her own: Julie tells Jimmy that she wants a divorce.
Gabrielle stops by the Crab Shack (where Ryan remains employed), where she proceeds to tell Ryan that she used to be a bad ass. She admits that it must look weird that she and Caleb are together, what with the age gap and all. But she assures Ryan that she loves him as much as he'll let her. Just then, Marissa drops in. She has come to tell Ryan that she might get back together with Luke. Ryan, though saddened, remains indifferent.
Later on outside, Seth and Ryan run into Marissa and Summer, who are eating. Summer, taking a cue from the awkward air between Ryan and Marissa, takes Seth to pick out some condiments. Summer asks Seth if she can go to the party for Caleb with him. He says sure. Summer also asks him to lick her finger, as she's gotten a dab of condiment on it. He hesitantly, but gladly, obliges. Of course it turns out that Summer only wants to go to the party to meet rich, young suitors. Marissa disapproves.
After repeatedly bringing the subject up with Kirsten, Sandy informs Caleb that they are thinking of moving back to Berkeley and cutting ties with Caleb's business altogether. Kirsten is upset with Sandy for revealing this, as she has not yet made up her mind. Caleb flips out and tells Kirsten he expects her resignation in the morning. He also lets Sandy know how much he loathes him. The party for Caleb will go on as planned.
Gabrielle is out in the pool house with Ryan, coming on even stronger than she did at the Crab Shack. She tells Ryan that Caleb is only with her to remain entertained, and that she is bored, as all people are. She proceeds to kiss Ryan, until Caleb calls her from the house. Ryan is left paralyzed. The next morning, Seth and Ryan lounge in the pool. Seth figures out that his "grandma" and Ryan played kiss face, and he is thrilled. But he asks 'What about Marissa?' Ryan replies, 'What about her?'
That night at Caleb's party, Gabrielle's flirtations towards Ryan continue, Luke is being really nice to both Seth and Ryan, and Kirsten is upset with Sandy because she perceives his eagerness to move back to Berkeley as an overall unhappiness with the life that they have had together in Newport Beach. A chaotic Newport party once again. To add to the action, Jimmy shows up at the party, infuriating Julie, who is embarrassed by him. Jimmy says he's going to ask Caleb for a job. Caleb turns him down. Julie is a busy gal, making some advances of her own. She comes on quite strongly to Caleb, letting him know she is about to be divorced. Caleb responds well to this and asks for a dinner date at some point in the future. Julie agrees.
Summer warns Marissa to make a decision between Luke and Ryan soon, as it is unlikely the guys will wait much longer for her. With that warning, Marissa runs out to the pool house, only to find Ryan and Gabrielle making out, quite obviously on their way to having sex. Marissa is devastated. She runs back to the party on the rebound and grabs Luke. She tells him she is ready to have sex. Luke responds well to this news and whisks her away to his place. Ryan runs after them but they have already driven away.
Outside, Summer approaches her party non-date, Seth. Seth rails at Summer for using him, and then ditching him to speak to rich men. He tells her that they will never care for her like he does. He then recites a poem she had written in grade six, called 'I Wish I Was a Mermaid'. Summer is floored that he remembered her poem, and she kisses him in flattery. He is left paralyzed, and Summer returns to the party.
As the night begins to wind down, Caleb asks Kirsten not to resign. He tells her that she is 'all he's got' since her mother died, and her sister isn't in the picture. Kirsten ensures him she isn't going anywhere. Gabrielle and Ryan also end the evening on a good note. She tells him that he is lucky to be loved, and that she wishes that somebody loved her. Meanwhile Marissa gives herself to Luke. In her eyes, it is evident she misses Ryan.
After the party ends and everyone is sleeping, Ryan waits in the driveway for Marissa to return home. Luke drops her off, and Ryan knows what has happened. He approaches Marissa, and she tells him 'it's too late'. Ryan is paralyzed once again.
