Episode 3:
This episode opens at the juvenile hall that Ryan and Luke were taken to after their arrest. Sandy meets with Ryan and informs him that since he doesn't have a legal guardian, he won't be released. As he says this, Ryan sees Luke being released to his mother. It also helps that Luke has no prior offenses on his record. Sandy reassures Ryan that all will be fine. Ryan is increasingly angered by his situation. Sandy leaves the detention center and we see that Ryan is not popular inside. An inmate named Nordlund is particularly aggressive toward Ryan. He and his gang beat up Ryan and stab him in the neck with a fork.
Back at home, Seth is angered by his grounding, and by the fact that Ryan can't just come and live in the Cohen home. He directs this anger primarily towards his mother. When he thinks nobody is watching, Seth tries to sneak out of the house to go and visit Ryan in jail. Kirsten catches him and he invites her along. She agrees. On the way, Seth drops by Marissa's, where Summer is trying on clothes. Seth gets all disoriented when he sees topless Summer, but gets around to asking Marissa to come with him. She decides it would be best if she didn't go since Luke is still angry with her for seeing Ryan at the model home.
Kirsten is extremely uncomfortable when she and Seth arrive at juvenile hall. As Seth and Ryan chat, she is ogled by Nordlund. Ryan stands up for her and a fight breaks out. Because he protected her, and due to the unsuitable environment, Kirsten takes guardianship of Ryan and has him released from the jail. Sandy is a bit upset when he sees Ryan back at the Cohen home. He fears Ryan is just being jerked around and will get his hopes up, only to lead to disappointment. Kirsten says she just couldn't leave him in jail. They'll figure something out.
The next day, Ryan and Seth go with Kirsten to help set up her 'Vegas Night'. Luke and Marissa are also there, which provides for many an awkward moment. The posh, snotty 'friends' of Kirsten are not amused that she decided to bring Ryan to the function, nor to the neighbourhood.
Later in the day, Julie Cooper has a rendezvous with Sandy Cohen, who insults her. Julie returns home to speak to Jimmy about the harsh treatment. Jimmy tells her to take any abuse that the Cohens dish out, because they are now paying the Cooper bills. Julie is astonished to hear that Kirsten lent Jimmy $100,000.
Meanwhile, Sandy goes on a hunt and finds Ryan's mother, Dawn. When he brings her back, Ryan has mixed feelings. It turns out, though, that Dawn has turned over a new leaf. She has a new job at a laundromat, she's left the abusive A.J., and she's quit drinking. She says she wants to be the mother she never was for Ryan, giving him the typical "it'll be different this time" story. After a day out, Dawn and Ryan decide to go to 'Vegas Night' with the Cohens and the Newport community. Big mistake.
Though things seem to go well at the event, there is turmoil all around. Julie reveals to Sandy that his wife has given Jimmy and herself the $100,000 loan. Sandy, though stunned, pretends to know already. But Julie can read his bluff and goes back to Jimmy with the news. Sandy takes Kirsten aside and tells her that he is furious that she would make such a move without his knowledge. After all, the loan she gave is more than Sandy makes in a year. The fact that Jimmy is an old love of Kirsten's doesn't help the matter either. Jimmy comes barreling outside to assure Sandy that he will pay the money back and that the loan doesn't mean anything personal. Kirsten says the same.
Over at the gambling tables, Dawn seems fine at first, but as soon as Ryan leaves her side she begins to drink. It seems the excitement is too much for her. Ryan tries to assure Luke that Marissa loves him, and not Ryan, and that nothing happened between the two that night at the model home. Luke seems to buy it because he goes back to Marissa's side.
Perhaps the only person that things are going well for at 'Vegas Night' is Seth. As he walks by Summer at a gambling table, her dice go flying and land at his feet. He picks them up and she insists he blow on them, as she is superstitious. He does, and although she can't seem to get his name right, Summer insists that Seth stay with her as he is her good luck charm. He is happy to oblige, and is rewarded with a kiss.
The night ends in embarrassment for the Cohens and Dawn. After drinking too much, Dawn falls down and makes a mess of herself. The Cohens pick Dawn up and take her home. The next morning it is clear to Dawn that she isn't going to be a better mother at all. She asks Kirsten to take care of Ryan, as she knows she can. With a wave, Dawn leaves Ryan. The final scene has Kirsten telling Sandy and Seth that Ryan will be staying with them. Ryan has a home.
