episode 2:
The second episode of 'The Orange County' opens with sunny visuals of beautiful Southern California, paired with a fitting soundtrack. It is dinnertime at the Cohen house, and Sandy and Kirsten prepare the meal while Seth and Ryan lounge in the pool. Sandy fears that since Ryan is an older teenager, it isn't likely that he'll be placed in a foster home. He'll have to live in a group home until he is eighteen, and will be property of the government until then. Kirsten can't believe a mother would abandon her child.
When the boys come in for dinner, Seth states the obvious and asks why Ryan can't just stay there with them. Kirsten still can't handle the thought of Seth being corrupted or harmed by Ryan's negative influence, so Ryan signs the form that makes the group home his new guardian. Sandy will take him there the next morning.
As night falls, Ryan decides to run away rather then face life in a group home. Seth catches him and asks to go with him. Ryan says no, so Seth says he has a better idea. While he goes in to change and get some supplies Ryan waits at the end of the driveway, where he again runs into Marissa. Marissa offers to give the boys a ride to wherever they are going. Ryan accepts, against Seth's wishes.
It turns out that Seth has a pretty cool place for Ryan to stay - a model home that was built by his mother's business and abandoned after contracting issues arose. The house isn't finished, but it is private and has a skateboard ramp in the back. As Seth tries out the ramp, Marissa and Ryan get to know each other. It is obvious that they have feelings for each other. This of course miffs Seth, who holds a grudge against Marissa for never acknowledging him.
The three decide to keep it a secret between themselves that Ryan is staying at the model home. Ryan agrees to stay when Marissa tells him to, which also miffs Seth.
The following morning, Seth and Marissa team up to bring Ryan some supplies to survive on. But they forget food, so they decide to go out. After the three frolic on the waterfront, they stop at a diner. But to prove that nothing ever goes as planned, Luke and his posse come into the same diner for their lunch. Ryan and Seth try to sneak out, but Luke spots them and another fight ensues. The police are called and Sandy joins them in the search for Ryan.
Seth, Ryan, and Marissa return to the model home. While they are setting up upstairs, they see Kirsten and Jimmy pull up to the model home. Seth and Marissa seem surprised to see their parents together, especially alone at the house. When Kirsten and Jimmy come in they talk about Jimmy's money problems and Kirsten agrees to lend him $100,000. Jimmy is relieved and says he'll pay her back. The quick-and-easy money transfer shocks Marissa and Seth, but they don't verbalize anything.
After realizing that the construction of the model home is about to resume, Ryan decides to hit the road. He will leave the following morning. Seth goes home, where Sandy pushes him to go out on the hunt for Ryan with him. Marissa goes to Summer's party, where Summer, Luke, and some other kids make fun of Ryan. This angers Marissa, and she leaves. What she doesn't know is that Luke and some friends will follow.
Marissa goes to the model home to meet Ryan for a last night together. Of course Ryan would love to spend time with Marissa, but he doesn't want to get attached because a relationship between the two would never work out. They are too different. He tells her to leave. She does, and Luke sees her running in tears to her car. He looks angrily to see Ryan run out after Marissa.
Luke and his posse make their way up into the house, to find Ryan blowing out the candles and packing up his things. But Luke won't let him get away and a fight breaks out. One thing leads to another and a candle tips over, which sets the house on fire. Luke and his friends take off, making sure Ryan gets out as well. They leave him lying on the ground outside the house and take off.
Seth and Sandy are still out 'looking' for Ryan when they get the call from Kirsten that the model home has been vandalized. They head over, and Seth admits he knows more than he'd been letting on. Meanwhile, Ryan is hitchhiking, likely trying to leave town. Luke pulls up and gives him a ride back to the Cohen's, asking that they work together to keep their involvement in the fire a secret. But the secret doesn't last long, because when they pull up to the Cohen home, the police are waiting and they are both arrested.
